Lead PRN Sexual Assault Victim Advocate – On-call / Relief

The SAFE Alliance’s Sexual Assault Victim Advocacy Program seeks a Lead PRN (on-call) Sexual Assault Accompaniment Specialist (victim advocate) to provide medical accompaniment to survivors of sexual assault during their forensic exam for evidence collection and supervise weekend shifts on a rotating roster.

About SAFE:

  • SAFE’s mission is our name: Stop Abuse For Everyone. We achieve our mission by acknowledging and responding to the intersection of child abuse, sexual assault, human trafficking, and domestic violence.
  • The SAFE Alliance grew out of the courageous work of the Center for Battered Women, the Austin Rape Crisis Center, and the Austin Children’s Shelter, all respected, women-led human service agencies created by volunteers and informed by survivors who needed support, safety and justice.
  • With over 20 programs and 400 staff, we have been serving the Austin community and beyond for over 30 years.
  • The SAFE Alliance strongly encourages members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including Black, Indigenous, and people of color; LGBTQ+ identified people; gender-nonconforming people; individuals with disabilities; veterans; and people who speak a language in addition to English.

About this position:

  • We need you to fill the role of Lead Sexual Assault Accompaniment Specialist. This is a PRN (on-call), non-exempt position. The Lead Specialist provides medical accompaniment to survivors of sexual assault, and assumes a leadership role as weekend shift supervisor.

You can be dispatched to any facility in Travis County and must respond in less than 60 minutes. We will pay you $21.54/hour for time worked, plus $5 on-call compensation for each 8-hour shift, and $100 on-call compensation for each weekend as shift supervisor.

Key Duties:

  • Commit to a minimum of one weekend as shift supervisor every 4-5 weeks.
  • Provide phone and text support to weekend advocates. Assist in exam coordination, provide the advocate on the scene with backup support ie research, shelter admission, safety planning, and ride shares, and keep the roster up-to-date.
  • Commit to the minimum number of on-call hours per month:
    • Month with WSS: 32 hours of on-call per month.
    • Month without WSS: 48 on-call hours that month.
  • PRN shifts are primarily weekends and M-F evenings. You self-schedule, so there is ample flexibility. Specialists are not onsite while on-call; you may or may not be dispatched during your shift.
  • Provide face-to-face, confidential, crisis intervention and support, discuss medical and legal options, and explain SAFE’s support services (such as counseling, legal advocacy and follow-up services).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social or behavioral sciences, or related field, preferred. Sufficient relevant experience may be substituted for degree.
  • Minimum 1 year experience providing crisis stabilization support and advocacy services to trauma survivors required.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.
  • Must be comfortable in your role as a leader while making decisions and interacting with intradepartmental staff.
  • Must be able to work well with a variety of other first responders including medical staff, forensic nurse examiners, law enforcement and victim services.
  • Must be able to cope well in unexpected situations, make on-the-spot decisions, and be adaptable to changing circumstances.
  • Must remain calm while providing crisis stabilization and establishing rapport and trust.
  • Must have good people skills - ability to engage survivors and really be present; be comfortable bearing witness to another’s process, while maintaining separation between any past trauma of your own and the survivor’s current crisis. (This work can be triggering. You cannot self-disclose or share personal history.)
  • Must maintain good professional boundaries.
  • Pass all required criminal history background checks.
  • COVID19 vaccination required for clinic and hospital clearance.
