Family Court Legal Advocate (FCLA)

The SAFE Family Court Legal Advocate (FCLA) is responsible for providing short/long-term advocacy and support to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and trafficking that are applying for a Protective Order through the Travis County Attorney’s Office. The advocate will directly provide advocacy and support through mechanisms such as conducting in court contacts, screening victims for high-risk safety concerns, offering information and referrals, and providing on-the-spot crisis intervention and safety planning. Housed in the County Attorney’s Office the position is supervised by the SAFE Director of Legal Services and on-site is guided by the Lead Prosecutor in the Protective Order Division for the Travis County Attorney’s Office (TCAO).

About this position:

  • The role of Family Court Legal Advocate (FCLA). This is a full time, non-exempt position in the legal services program. The role is located at the Travis County Attorney’s Office (TCAO) and is expected to maintain in-person direct services. Attending protective order court 3 days a week from 7:30 am – 12:00 pm will be required. We will pay you an annual salary of $41,000 – 43,000.

Key Duties:

  • Pandemic duties – Duties are modified to follow in person court protocols as set by court systems. On site, in person, contact with clients and volunteers is a regular part of the role.
  • Oversee volunteer provision of client-centered, trauma-informed survivor accompaniments. Protective Order court accompaniments include establishing a volunteer base that attends protective order court 3 days a week from 7:30 am – 12:00 pm.
  • Supervise volunteer legal advocates in providing direct services. Orient, onboard, train, evaluate and retain volunteers.
  • Assume the lead role for developing, coordinating, scheduling and delivering POCA orientations and training workshops 3x/year to both staff and volunteer advocates.
  • Participate in the 3 days a week court accompaniment shift supervision of protective order court legal advocates and on call for special settings as needed. Be trained for and provide court accompaniments in a client-focused manner.
  • Meet with true victim clients of TCAO family violence division for one on one sessions and provide documentation to family violence division and meet with TCAO walk in clients as needed.
  • Enter data collection into SAFE tracking system on a regular basis.
  • Provide monthly reports and tracking to Director of legal services.
  • Serves as an on-site resource at the Travis County District and County courts providing client-focused advocacy, counseling and referrals for applicants of a protective order represented by the TCAO.
  • Has exceptional interpersonal skills and can openly communicate with others while being able to recognizes and value the differences that different perspectives and cultures bring to the agency.
  • Works with TCAO and Travis County Domestic Violence High Risk Team (DVHRT) Coordinator in a coordinated community response to address “high risk” applicant needs.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with attorneys, court staff and the judiciary systems when advocating on behalf of SAFE clients.
  • Multi-tasks with strong situational adaptability and a keen eye for optimizing work processes.
  • Participates on task forces and in community groups, as requested by the SAFE Director Legal Services.
  • Coordinates with Director of Legal Services on creating, revising and implementing training of volunteer legal advocates.


  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree in social or behavioral sciences, or related field. Sufficient relevant work experience may be substituted for degree.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.
  • Experience coordinating a team, coordinating training and supervising volunteers strongly preferred.
  • Experience providing crisis stabilization support and advocacy or case management services to trauma/domestic violence /sexual assault survivors required.
  • Knowledge of training and curriculum development principles, procedures and techniques and experience developing, delivering and evaluating trainings preferred.
  • Possess excellent public speaking skills, writing and analytical skills for presentations and reports.
  • Knowledge of issues related to violence against women, sexual assault, domestic violence, issues related to racism and oppression.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of volunteer management and ability to guide and develop skills and performance of volunteers.
  • Possess critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as people and team development skills.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise initiative, and accomplish tasks without continuous supervision.
  • Pass all required criminal history background checks (including an FBI fingerprint check), as well a pre-employment drug screen and TB test.
